Jet Lag
Jet Lag, formally known as "circadian desynchronosis", is a disruption of the subtle but powerful internal
biological clock that regulates many body functions, such as temperature, kidney output, and normal sleep/wake
patterns. It affects not only travelers but also people who work at odd
hours.
Hangover
Hangover is a mild version of alcohol withdrawal syndrome, which causes delerium tremens (DT) in alcoholics.
The headache of hangover is caused, in part, by alcohol's relaxing effect on the blood vessels. As they relax, they
open up and accommodate more blood, which causes the sensation of warmth people associate with drinking. But
if the blood vessels of the head open too much, they trigger nerve activity causing pain. Alcohol also increases
urination and can lead to moderate dehydration. The nausea and vomiting are a combination of alcohol's
irritating effect on the stomac and its effect on the central nervous system. Alcohol has a depressant effect and
causes build-up of acids in the blood which produces fatigue and a general lousy-all-over feeling.
Anxiety and Stressful States
Anxiety is out biological alarm. When we perceive danger, we respond by becoming anxious. A certain amount
of anxiety is normal but sometimes normal levels are exceeded and safe situations are perceived as dangerous.
Scientist believe that levels of anxiety are influenced by complex interaction of genetics, illnesses, drugs, and our
history of traumatic events.
